Welcome to my IRC page - or in other words "Internet Relay Chat" as it is often known as. IRC has been around for years in various forms - from the basic chat forums on BBSes (Bulletin Board Systems) that like CompuServe grew into huge Corporations to the standard IRC servers and their many thousands of chat channels. On the Internet, currently there are probably millions of chat channels enabling Internet users to chat to each other simultaneously in real time - that is to say everything goes on at once. THIS can be hectic .....
On this page there are some addresses of IRC servers both in the UK and abroad, plus a list of some of the more popular chat channels.
Once you have your "chat client"* program configured to your settings.... click on new entry or the equivalent, then ....
type in one of the addresses below to get online on a server.
* "chat client" - this is the program that you use to connect to an online IRC server. At the bottom of the page there are links to some of the more useful and common chat programs.

Above was just a short list of some of the servers that I know of, there are PLENTY more, it's just a question of finding out which ones are public and which ones are private and need a password. A word of caution about all the servers mentioned here and elsewhere - some of the rooms are really dodgy and should be best left alone. Stick to the main rooms and you can't go wrong. Below are some links to some of the more popular chat client programs on the 'net, with a score for their overall performance:
GlobalChat - this program is sometimes included with 'net trials from various Internet Providers. E.g. Virgin Net. Score: 7/10
mIRC v.5.xx - this program is generally perceived as THE chat program - and why not? it has loadsa features amongst which it is fully customisable (in that you can get add-ons for this program off of the Web to customise it). Score: 10/10

Chatting on the Internet is not just confined to Internet Relay Chat programs such as mIRC and GlobalChat, there are a myriad of other ways of communicating between friends, family, business colleagues and other associates. Below is a brief guide explaining the most common other forms of chat using the Internet.
ICQ:
ICQ or "I seek you" is like an Internet version of a pager. But more than that... it has a variety of online functions that will you have you gasping in awe. It has a messaging service, live and direct chat to anyone who is also online and is on your "buddy list". Other key functions of this service include user - to - user downloads through Mirabilis' servers (the makers of ICQ), Internet telephony (talking via microphone/speaker combination down the modem), and checking and sending email. Also when your not online, then people can leave messages for you to collect once you reconnect at a later time. For more information go to www.mirabilis.com or contact me on my UIN No. 2784850.
Netscape Conferencing and MS Netmeeting:
Both these two software packages are forms of Internet Telephony, by using a microphone and speakers you can communicate with other people with similar setups across the Internet. You can also collaborate on various files and even draw pictures in real-time to illustrate your points. As modem speeds increase with the introduction of V.90 capable modems, this kind of communication is set to increase amongst both business users and home users for various activities varying from games and just chatting to whole business conferences online. Other notable examples of such software include TribalVoice and Internet Phone 5 from Vocaltec. The Netscape and MS software is available from their respective sites.
